Lenten Roses

I co-wrote this song with Bill Lancton. Bill’s a wonderful jazz guitarist I’ve known since I was a kid, and he’s always inspired me. I’m honored that he’s become part of the family. The guitar melody started out as a ukulele lullaby that Bill played to sooth Cadence when they were about a year old. I added the vocal part, and looped the guitar in places to make it easier to sing.

Long have hushed
dove and thrush
but the stubborn robin’s singing
to his blushing love
and I’ve grown you lenten roses

Through the high
howling cold
I can hear the creek is flowing
Spring will come, I’m told
and I’ve grown you lenten roses

I wonder sometimes
would I make it easy if I could?
Thunder fills the skies
and I’ve grown you lenten roses

Little one
by the stream
do you try to hold the ocean?
You only have to be
and I’ll grow you lenten roses

Night is long
far too long
so we won’t wait on the morning
Dare to get it wrong
for I’ve grown you lenten roses

I wonder sometimes
will there even be another dawn?
Thunder fills the skies
and I’ve grown you lenten roses
